wow, i rung a vet today on Kessels rd, Mt Gravatt, to see about getting ivomec just incase of mange, and she quoted me $80 for a consult, but then she reminded me that the RSPCA have a month of warrenty on health, i dont think wiggy has mange, but he did some strange things yesterday, and does the odd fur scratch, chew, so might just go back and get a final check, shame albany creek is so far.

You know with that price as a consult fee, it is worth it BIG TIME! To travel to get to Albany CReek I mean!
My local vets charge 40$ just to walk in the door!

I live in Moorooka, so not too far, but still a bit of a distance. I don't actually use Ivomec, I use Revolution ... You can just buy it from the vet I think, I don't think you need a consult to get it .. least I don't think so, I could be wrong but .. perhaps someone here might be able to sell you some ..

I know I did see on a site for rats/mice that someone was selling 100 mls for $20 including postage .. maybe we should do something like that??

My name is Tanya

Jess can grab a hold of thru her vet the Ivomec and Revolution, I purchased mine originally through Jess. The other bottle I got off katt.

As far as I know you can just walk into the vets and ask for it and purchase it, if you have troubles I am pretty sure you can buy it through Jess and she may know some1 off memory that sells them in bulk from interstate.

Definetely dont need a vet appointment, unless its for an animal you need to treat, then its best to get it looked at by a vet also. Otherwise for general worming etc, dont go for a vet book in, not necessary.

We have enslaved animals and have treated our distant cousins in fur and feathers so badly that beyond doubt, if they were able to formulate a religion, they would depict the Devil in human form.

thje rspca gives revolution to every guinea pig they receive so even if wiggy did have mange he wouldn't now. Revolution does the job as soon as it's administered it kills everything basically so yeah if you got your boy from the rspca he won't have mange as they treat them with revolution nowdays as standard procedure on arrival I was told.

Ivomec can be bought over the country no problems you can say you need it for worming and that usually does the trick. Umm you can also purchase ivomec here through myself at the shelter and you can also purchase revolution through here no probs

Jess

Just to update that last post of mine, i forgot to say i had been to the local vet, who said they would not sell it until another vet was there tomorrow as they didnt no about use on a piggy with it, thats why i rung the other vet, who was more small animals vet, find a good vet who doesnt charge like a wounded bull i think and knows wee animals.

well another update, rung back the local vet, they wont sell it without seeing Wiggy, they wont be held liable, okay, at least they only charge $48 and not $80 for a consult, so i think easiest option is Jess or Heather.

They are the most knowledgeable small-animal vets that I have come across in WA, and their clinics are staffed by some wonderful and very caring people. Highly recommended!

Oooh, I only just saw this!

One of the staff at Greencross Vets at Woolloongabba looked at Esmerelda initially when she had the mammary tumour and abscess that kept exploding. Unfortunately he didn't seem to know that much at all. He kept asking if she was possibly pregnant (!), and said that the abscess was most likely caused by an ovarian problem. Of course, this was far from the truth.

I ended up seeing a vet named Jackie when he was away one day, and she was lovely. Eventually she admitted to me that although they do operate on the occasional guinea pig, they lose more than they can save. She actually advised me to see Dr Bob at UQ, and said that if it was her pet she wouldn't take the chance.

I did find them ok for minor issues and medication, but I wouldn't recommend them for pigs otherwise.

Just wanted to highlight this thread for all members (new and... pre-loved!) to list any vets in your area, who you would personally recommend.

Please remember that any vets recommended should be knowledgable in the treatment of small animals.

Your recommendation will then be added to the ACS website, here:

Most of my teachers at the moment are vets and when I asked who was a really good vet to go to they all said:

Warrandrte Veterinary Clinic (East of Melbourne)
91 Melbourne Hill Rd, WARRANDYTE, Victoria
phone: (03)98443971

Just say your looking for a guinea pig specialist and they will get you an
appointment with the rodent specialist vet.
(sorry I can't remember his name and I don't have his card!!)

He is on the expensive side ($80 an appointment!) but he knows his stuff and is very good.

Frances.

This vet has already been recommended, however I want to recommend them again. They have treated Buttercup twice now and both times they have effectively and efficiently diagnosed her problems and then provided the appropriate treatment. They also cater for Rabbits and I believe even Reptiles. Boarding is available for small animals and you have the choice of 2 different style cages.

Their main veterinary centre can be found here:
Dr Elizabeth-Jo Vickridge
Unit 10/20 Shields Cres
Booragoon 6154

T: 08 9330 2321
M: 0419 851 015
Mon to Fri: 8am to 5:30pm
Sat: 8am to 2pm

They are also open on Sundays, although not for vet treatment unless urgent. I spoke to the vet and the vet then spoke to 2 girls via telephone and I was able to get another weeks dose of bactrim and metacam for Buttercup.

They also have a mobile service and will come to your home (or anyother place), they travel to all suburbs (within reason);
0439 851 014

I believe their is another centre at Heathridge:
94 Caridean St
Heathridge

T: 08 9329 9200
M: 0439 521 824
E: [email protected]
